So the Telly Net comes of age. We're 3 years old, and have now completed our first event series with funding from Northern Film & Media which underpinned six events. We've now entered a new era in partnership with Northumbria University, who are funding the cost of a full-time member of staff to promote, develop and run Telly Net activity - a development which really takes the organisation onto a new level. Read more about our next event here.

For those of you who haven't heard of us, the North East Telly Net is a networking organisation for anyone working on the film or TV industries in the North East of England. Events organised over the last 3 years include a major panel event with four leading industry figures talking about a strategy for the region, several 'showcase' events displaying work from practitioners in the North East, three speed networking events, a regular Suumer Party and a screening of some of the best work from the North East's media production graduates. Our guest speakers have included renowned music TV director Geoff Wonfor, Whizzkid's Malcolm Gerrie, Sky factual commissioning editor Andrew O'Connell, former head of BBC Factual, John Willis, award-winning cinematographer Lol Crawley, and development executives from Lime Pictures, Century Films, Mentorn Scotland and Baby Cow.

But the basics remain the same. Whether you're freelance, staff, supplier, indie or broadcaster - if you're in the film or telly business, or connected to it, the North East Telly Net is now the best way to keep your ear to the ground and network on a regular basis with your peers and colleagues. What's more, the group is getting a lot of attention not just within our own area, but from neighbouring regions who are keen to emulate the model we're developing here.

How does it work? The web bit is dead dead simple. One email address and one mailing list: anyone registered to get mail FROM the mailing list, can also send mail TO the mailing list, so if you email that one address, everyone else in the network gets it. The Yahoo group site is here. Pass on news, ask a question, announce an event, organise a booze-up - or just lurk quietly and read what the others are saying. We also now have a forum where you can say hi, ask a question or just introduce yourself.

What's it for? The intention is for the Telly Net to connect people; not just on the net, but more importantly, face to face as well. We want people in the NE's TV industry to have a humming grapevine, and a way of meeting regularly. Ooh (sudden intake of breath)... it's that nasty word, 'networking'. But in reality, we'll be chuffed to see you, whether it fits into your televisual master plan, or whether you just fancy meeting like-minded people for a drink and a good night out. We hope to have meet-ups as often as possible.
